Hollander Welcomes New Lead Chief Engineer
Please help us congratulate Wayne Ruedinger on his new role as Lead Chief Engineer!
Wayne started his journey with Hollander Hospitality in 1994 as part of the conference & maintenance teams at the Best Western Park Plaza. In 1998 Wayne transitioned to projects with Guy Bourn, Hotel Facilities Manager, to finish the Holiday Inn Express Puyallup. Once HIE was finished, Wayne accepted the role of Conference Manager at Best Western until 2001, when he took a break due to military deployments. In 2011, Wayne came back on to our team to help improve the conference department at the Best Western and to help Guy on our Fairfield Inn & Suites Puyallup project. Once this project finished, Wayne filled in as temporary Chief Engineer at Fairfield until his promotion to Corporate Project Manager. Wayne managed the remodel of our Courtyard Tacoma Downtown, and helped finish the remodel of our Crowne Plaza Seattle Airport, where he then became Chief Engineer.
Wayne’s new role will allow him to continue his passion for quality maintenance while also expanding his opportunities to help with training and organizing processes and procedures for all of our Hollander Properties. His passion for quality and his ability to train and mentor his staff have proved to be an asset to not only the Crowne Plaza but also Hollander Hospitality as a whole.
Wayne spent 29 years in the Air Force as an Avionic Technician on the C17 Aircraft. He has traveled all over the world on several deployments. Wayne enjoys traveling, especially to the Philippines where he and his wife built a house and his family resides.
Wayne is the perfect example of Hollander’s passion to promote from within. We are thankful for Wayne’s loyalty and tenure with our company, and wish him the best in his new role!

Courtyard's Spirit to Serve
Marriott corporate requested to have an above property meeting (owners and management groups) at our Courtyard by Marriott Tacoma Downtown. Following lunch they performed a "Spirit to Serve" event. This event consisted of putting together donated items and placing them into bags to deliver to a local community group. The gift bags consisted of toiletries, amenities and a toy which was presented to the Mary Bridge MultiCare Treehouse building.
The Tree House is a facility where immediate family members of patients can stay to be close to the hospital. In many cases the families may stay for reduced fees or even free, depending on their financial situations. Since they don't provide hotel type amenities, these gift bags go toward helping out those who are staying at the facility. It is great that Marriott supports the local communities, hospitals and businesses when they come and have meetings in the area.
Fairfield's Spirit to Serve
Fairfield Inn & Suites participated in Marriott’s Spirit to Serve Day with a toy drive. The donated toys went to Open Hearth Ministries which is a local shelter program for homeless families in Puyallup.

This Earth Day event allowed us to show the pride and commitment we have for our community by helping to keep our neighborhood clean and green, and to keep trash out of the waterways. Thank you to those that participated!

Humanitarian Trip by Portland HR Generalist
“I just returned from a three week trip to Cambodia called [CACO/GLEF] Humanitarian Tour Vacation with a Purpose with a group of 21 Americans. The first two weeks was spent with the tour group visiting schools, participating in the grand opening of a new school, ground breaking ceremony of a future school, visiting other schools that we had built in previous years and visiting other non-profit organizations. These schools are funded by the local non-profit organization called Golden Leaf Education Foundation here in Portland. We do an annual fundraiser each year, and for the past five years, we have been able to raise enough funds to build three schools with another one on the way. It was heartwarming and wonderful to see the great big smile on the children’s faces who are so hungry for education, but many lack the opportunity. Thank you to the many donors and supporters that contributed to this success, including the Crowne Plaza hotel, who have donated items for the auction gala each year. At each school we visited we donated bicycles, school supplies and ice creams for a cool treat to thousands of students.
At one of the schools, we had the opportunity to donate hundreds of wine bottle bags from IHG. Our group cut out the pockets so it would not be too heavy in the suitcase, filled the bag with medicines and donated them to the elders in the villages. This may be something we take for granted here in America and use only once, but to them it’s like a Coach or better yet a Gucci bag that will be put to good use. It was great to see the smiles. Crowne Plaza was also present at one of the non-profit organizations that we visited, called Building Bridges for Children (BBC). We had the pleasure of distributing our Crowne Plaza T-shirts to the BBC youth club. These students come to BBC to learn English and other after school enrichment skills, such as computer and leadership skills.”
Mardine Mao is the Human Resources Generalist for the Crowne Plaza Portland Downtown and is one the founding board members for GLEF (Golden Leaf Education Foundation) and has been volunteering with CACO (Cambodian-American Community of Oregon) for the last 20 years. These organizations work together to be able to donated necessary items such as bicycles, school supplies, rice, medicines, tooth brushes/paste and other needed supplies, along with working to “unite, preserve and empower” volunteerism and the culture and traditions of Cambodia.
This is Mardine’s third trip with this group and she says she “feel[s] honored and privileged to have little skills and knowledge to help both organizations”.
Mardine also volunteers with the Cambodian, Lao and Thai New Year in the Park, and Cambodian Dance Troupe of Oregon to organize the Cambodian New Year celebration together on her spare time.
